XOEL - immigration brings cultural diversity

XOEL

From Galicia to The Netherlans. His experience.

How long have you been in the Netherlands? Where do you come from?

Since May 2022, over 6 months. I come from Galicia, Spain.

What brought you here?

The working conditions, standard of living and personal ambitions.

How was the beginning? What was the biggest challenge?

The beginning was quite easy for me, because from the first day I had a lot of support and everything was very organised in the hotel.

What took me longer to get use to has been the meals, as Dutch gastronomy and eating culture is quite different to the Spanish one.

What was your professional experience before coming to the Netherlands?

I worked for 4 years in different restaurants and bars in Galicia besides other jobs outside the hospitality industry.

Where do you work at the moment?

Jaz in the city Amsterdam.

What do you like the most about working and the Netherlands?

The working conditions, respect and organisation.

What do you think about life in the Netherlands? And about Dutch people?

Well, I feel they take everything easier because they are really efficient in what they do and especially they respect schedules.

I would give Dutch guys a 9 and Dutch girls a 10.

What do you like to do in your free time? Any special advice on places to visit?

I like to walk, bike and read.

I don't have very concrete advice, but the Dutch railway network allows you to travel quickly to any city, Groningen is highly recommended :)

Favorite Dutch product?

Bitterballen

Favorite Dutch word?

Rustig (Chill).

How about commuting with a bike?

Great, you keep fit and adapt to the way of life .

Would you recommend this experience to other Spanish people?

Yes, of course. They do need to be prepared to take the step, speaking a different language all day long and missing friends and family.

What advice would you give someone who wants to move to the Netherlands?

Just call me and let's have a drink together.

Anything else you'd like to share?

Well… responsible immigration do not only help us grow as individuals, but can also enrich others, sharing new ideas, ways of thinking and promoting diversity.
