SERGIO - His culinary journey into The Netherlands

SERGIO

From fabulous kitchens in Catalonia to the exotic flavors of Bahrain, Sergio's culinary journey took an unexpected turn when he made the bold leap to The Netherlands in 2022, guided and supported by TRIBE NL and his life partner. In this exclusive interview, Sergio opens up about his experiences and culinary adventures in his newfound home.

How long have you been in the Netherlands?

I've been in the Netherlands for a year and three months since I first arrived.

What brought you here?

Primarily, the search for new gastronomic experiences. I decided to leave Spain to venture first into the Emirates, creating a global network of knowledge and exploring various cuisines worldwide. It has been a great learning experience.

How was the beginning in the Netherlands? What was the most challenging?

I actually had strong support, especially from Natalia, Julia, and, above all, my wife. Everything flowed smoothly, although I admit that finding housing was a challenge, but fortunately, I didn't encounter problems in other aspects.

What professional experience did you bring?

I am a Higher Technician in Cooking and Higher Technician in Pastry. Before coming to the Netherlands, I worked leading various kitchens in Catalonia, and my previous position was as Head Chef in Bahrain.

Where do you currently work?

Currently, I am the Executive Sous Chef at NENI Amsterdam, a renowned restaurant with branches throughout Europe, specializing in Eastern Mediterranean cuisine.

What do you think about life in the Netherlands and the Dutch people?

It's a country I wouldn't rule out for starting a family, as it provides a good environment for children's education. Regarding the Dutch, you have to get used to their frankness; they are very direct, but I consider it a positive trait.

What do you like to do in your free time? Any special advice on places to visit?

Primarily, I enjoy Utrecht, the city where I live; it's spectacular, filled with youth and excellent gastronomy. In my free time, I always dedicate myself to exploring, getting to know, and studying different types of gastronomy and local spots.

Favorite Dutch product?

Without a doubt, Poffertjes with Nutella and butter.

Favorite Dutch word?

Lekker (haha).

How about cycling around?

Besides being a good savings for your pocket, it's an excellent way to stay healthy, as you exercise daily. It's comfortable due to the country's structure, highly recommended.

What advice would you give to someone considering moving to the Netherlands?

Patience, an open mind, avoid creating false expectations, and, above all, invest time in improving your English!

Would you recommend this experience to other Spanish people?

Definitely. If you're looking for a new experience and want to broaden your horizons, it's undoubtedly a good choice to take the step, especially if you're still undecided.

Anything else you would like to share?

Nothing in particular, just that I would be delighted for anyone reading this to come and visit, and even though I haven't been here for long, I'm sure there's some advice I can share. I encourage everyone to live this experience; it makes us grow as individuals and feel fulfilled when we achieve it.
