Living in The Netherlands. From Seville to Amsterdam

Interview

From Seville to Amsterdam. Jose tells us about his journey which started in January of 2013.

How long have you been living in The Netherlands?

9 years

What brought you here?

Love & a severe financial crisis

How was the beginning? Which kind of challenges did you face?

The beginning was not easy; adapting to another climate and culture is always challenging, but without a doubt the hardest and most frustrating thing was the language, since I spoke very little English and no Dutch at all.

With what studies / professional experience did you come to the Netherlands?

A Healthcare Degree (Vocational Education and Training). I had work experience in the healthcare, transport, logistics, factories, etc.

What was your first job?

Housekeeping in a hotel. It was hard work and often you don’t feel appreciated. I have deep respect for the cleaning staff in the hotel industry.

What was/is your last job?

I am responsible of the Bar in a 4 star hotel. When I left Housekeeping and started working in the Food & Beverage departments I realised I had a hidden passion for cocktails and mixology. I followed then several trainings and courses; thanks to them and the experience on the job I started growing in the field.

What do you like the most about working in The Netherlands?

The peace of mind that as a worker your rights are protected.

What do you think about the Hospitality Industry?

From my own experience… that with motivation and hard work, it is relatively easy to grow.

Your favourite Dutch product?

“Genever”: It could be defined as the '' father '' of gin although less known.

Your favourite Dutch word?

Several: “lekker”, “gratis” and some others I shouldn’t share here, hahaha.

What do you enjoy doing in your free time? Any tips?

When I started living in Amsterdam, I used to go out around the city center, it is a very diverse city with an immense cultural offer.

Tip: go see an Ajax game if you like football, the atmosphere is phenomenal!

What about travelling by bike?

If you live in the city it has its charm, the truth is that now I use mostly other means of transport.

Would you recommend this experience to other Spanish people?

Without a doubt. Getting out of your comfort zone, exploring a new city, learning a language, meeting people from all over the world ... a highly recommended experience.

Which advice would you give to someone who is planning to move to The Netherlands?

I would recommend you to study English, even Dutch. It will open many doors for you here.

Go on… tell us your favourite cocktail. Will you share the recipe?

Negroni: 30 ml gin, 30 ml red vermouth and 30 ml Campari
